SESF Front 01 Shop Review: Self Edge San FranciscoJust north of San Francisco the old defense batteries, that was build on Marin Headlands during World War II tells tales of the fear of a Japanese attack on the all important harbor and city on the American west coast.

Little did they know that the Japanese invasion wouldn’t hit the Levi Strauss hometown until more than 50 years later, and that it would hit in the very same street that used to be home of the Levi’s factory, Valencia Street in Mission District. Fortunately it didn’t come in any violent form, but in the shape of a small shop loaded with state-of-the-art Japanese denim. The name of the shop is Self Edge.

The trend of experimenting with “treatments” to get unique fadings has reached Australia. Inspired by Martin who threw his Edwin jeans in a Danish river for three months, Daniel Jacobs from Port Hacking south of central Sydney shorten the period to three weeks when his soaked his Nudie dry selvage Regular Ralfs in the salty Port Hacking River that flows to the Pacific Ocean. Daniel dived to place the jeans under water, anchored them by a rock and then waited.

IMG 5664 640x426 Shop Review: Kul & Koks

Let me be completely honest about this, once you get outside of Copenhagen there isn’t really that much to explore for hardcore denim nerds in Denmark. Sure, there are a few decent shop scattered around the country that know a thing or two about denim and run a tight operation, one of such is Kul & Koks. Located in Kolding on the southern east coast of the Jutland peninsula, Kul & Koks is the no. 1 shopping destination for the 90,000 residents of the Kolding municipality. The shop celebrated its 20th anniversary in November 2011 and for almost a decade Kul & Koks hasn’t been following the regular sales season – that’s how well-established the shop is.

IMG 1710 628x466 Nudie Jeans Co: 100% Organic DenimOn the outside, Nudie is the cheeky and rebellious tweenager that dyes her spiky hair black and wears her patched up dry jeans tight. But on the inside she has a heart of gold and a dream of saving the earth – or at least the denim industry. And she has a plan. Nudie Jeans Co proudly holds the market leadership of sustainable denim production and since 2006 the declared goal has been a completely organic jeans collection. From this fall it became a reality with all dry, stretch and selvage jeans being made of 100% organic cotton.

Trend Report: Bread & Butter SS13Bread & Butter is one of the world’s most important tradeshows. Period. It’s the biggest, the most visited, the most creative, and most inspirational show in Europe – maybe in the world for that matter – but for the 27th show this summer many of the usual suspects including Levi’s, Lee and Diesel were not exhibiting. The question “why” was on the lips or in the back of the minds of many attendances. Is Butter & Butter losing terrain, is it too expensive for the big brands, or is it the economy were some of the questions? However, instead of mourning the loss of the giants, I personally celebrated the birth of something new, something very exciting for hardcore jeans lovers and denim enthusiasts; the Tempel of Denim.

IMG 1310 640x480 Shop Review: Tenue de Nîmes

One of the shopping related highlights of my visit in Amsterdam back in April was Tenue de Nîmes where I had a chat with co-owner Rene Strolenberg. The shop is beyond compare the best denim shop in the city and I actually visited it nothing less than three times during the weekend I spent there. I just had to get back to have another look. But the greatest feature of the shop is actually not all the premium denim brands themselves, it’s how they’re mixed in with each other. You have high-end classic Momotaro jeans right next to fashionable skinny Acne jeans. And with every visit you discover something new.

P1030774 628x419 Shop Review: SOLO

After one very active year as a denim reporter, I’ve often heard the Swedish store chain SOLO mentioned. Until recently I had not set foot inside one myself, but I had an expectation of what it would be like, and let’s just say it was met. I only visited one of the “mothershops” on Norrmalmstorg in central Stockholm, but in this review I will project my observations to the other stores. SOLO is stuffed to the brim with an overwhelming supply of goods, and apparently this sales strategy works. You can question the aesthetics of it and the shops are somewhat hodgepodges, but the fact is that SOLO is a success, and they truly know how to sell jeans.
