I’ve worked in denim retail for over 15 years and although the conversation above is fictional (and maybe a bit far-fetched—I’ll admit it), it’s a recurring theme that raises many questions for consumers. And I would guess that it’s probably one in ten (at the most) who actually asks.

So why is it that some jeans cost several hundred dollars/euros, while others cost a tenth of that?

One explanation is the time it takes to manufacture them. Especially when the denim is made on so-called ‘shuttle looms’. In other words, when it’s ‘selvedge denim’.

Is selvedge denim that much better? Well, it depends on how we define what is “good”.

My friend Simon (@simon.giuliani) from @candianidenim compares selvedge denim to a classic American ‘muscle car’. Is it “better” than a modern car? Objectively, the answer will be a clear no! But still we are drawn to it; to the story and the feeling it gives us.

Today marks the 151st anniversary since Jacob Davi

Today marks the 151st anniversary since Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss were granted the patent for reinforcing workwear, including indigo-dyed denim trousers, with copper rivets.

For most people, such robust reinforcement may seem excessive nowadays. Rivets have transitioned from pure function - albeit a highly aesthetic one - to a more decorative element.

From a sustainability perspective, using metal rivets is inefficient when thread can do the work just as well. Plus, it’s much easier to recycle garments with stitched reinforcements.

Still, my jeans will continue to have rivets, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Does it really matter how and how often we wash our clothes?

When I was a kid in the 90s, my jeans were washed just about once a week. Even if they were hardly dirty 😲

15 years ago, when I really started getting obsessed with raw denim, it became clear to me that that approach was completely wrong. At least if you want “fades”.

That’s why, over the years, I’ve created several guides on how to wash your jeans—and not least how NOT to wash them 🙄

Time has caught up with us “washing geeks” and today for many it’s probably just as much about saving water and electricity, and not least ensuring that our clothes last longer. At least that’s how I imagine myself 🤔 Maybe I’m wrong?

Four months in my IHxSJF-634 for Y4 of the @indigo

Four months in my IHxSJF-634 for Y4 of the @indigoinvitational and it was time for the first wash 🐳

It brought out that gorgeous deep blue in the denim and highlighted the fades. Especially the whiskers. Honeycombs have never been something I can produce much of, and the obligatory breaks in the fabric on the back of the knees also appeared 🫣

Spring has truly come to Denmark and I caught some natural high/lows with sun and shade from the trees (last pic) ☀️
