A Guide to Denim and Heritage Menswear Retailers Across Europe

Europe may be smaller than North America geographically, but the differences in culture, style, and retail traditions can be surprisingly big from one country to the next.

That variety shows up in the shops too. Some lean heavily into Japanese denim and American workwear. Others mix heritage clothing with tailoring, motorcycles, military wear, outdoor gear, skate, surf, or contemporary menswear. Even when the brands overlap, the point of view is often very different.

This is the European part of my guide series on where to buy raw denim around the world. Shops are grouped by country and arranged alphabetically within each section. Each listing includes the city for quick reference.

About Shopping Online in Europe

If you live in the EU, buying from a shop in another EU member state means VAT is already included and there are no import duties when the order arrives.

Buying from a European shop outside the Union is different. Your order is subject to VAT, duties, and handling fees on arrival unless the retailer covers those costs. The same principle applies if you’re outside Europe and buying from a European retailer.

Born in 2001 from Graz’s punk rock scene, now one of Austria’s most interesting menswear shops—Japanese selvedge and Neapolitan shirting, chosen with the same independent spirit.

Frans Boone (Knokke-Heist)

One of Europe’s great independent menswear retailers, bringing together Japanese denim, Italian tailoring, American sportswear, and a remarkably personal approach to curation.

Kings & Queens (Antwerp)

A dedicated denim and boot store since 2009, shaped by Hans Bollen’s hands-on approach to heritage clothing, quality boots, fades, patina, and people. Serious Japanese denim and rugged menswear, with the kind of local following that has made Kings & Queens Antwerp’s denim destination.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Denimheads (Prague)

Founded to fill the gap in Czech heritage denim, now one of Central Europe’s most serious shops—come for the selvedge, stay for the beer.

DENMARK

Brund (Copenhagen)

Denmark’s denim destination since 2004, and the shop where I learned most of what I know about denim. I’ve been part of the team since 2012.

Goods (Copenhagen)

A refined menswear shop where Ivy, Italian tailoring, Scandinavian restraint, and Japanese labels meet without ever feeling loud.

Jake’s Apparel (Aarhus)

Lifestyle and heritage menswear seen through Jacob’s work as a photographer, with motorcycles, outdoor gear, and a personal brand selection all part of the same world.

Motorious (Copenhagen)

A heritage menswear shop that grew out of a motorcycle garage and still sells helmets and spare parts alongside the clothing.

Råh (Roskilde)

A local menswear shop in Denmark’s festival city, with premium denim, personal service, and the first Danish retailer to stock my own brand.

Wardrobe 19 (Copenhagen)

Leather jackets, engineer boots, and Japanese denim from a shop with a remarkably clear point of view—whether you’re building the whole look or just borrowing a piece of it.

FINLAND

Pinkomo (Helsinki)

Japanese selvedge, American boots, and European craft goods, chosen since 2011 with a genuine conviction that you should own fewer, better things.

FRANCE

Barnabé (Montpellier)

Denim, workwear, and lifestyle goods, with a distinctly French approach to combining clothing, homeware, and everyday objects.

Bienvenu (Annecy)

A relaxed menswear shop where Japanese denim, workwear, and lifestyle pieces feel more Alpine weekender than hardcore denim destination.

Bleu Brut (Bordeaux)

A Bordeaux retailer with a strong selvedge denim offering, balancing Japanese and North American heritage brands with a distinctly French sense of style.

Flâneurs (Rennes)

Founded in 2004, with its Rennes menswear shop open since 2013, Flâneurs specialises in selvedge jeans, Japanese menswear, and European knitwear—anchoring a small heritage-shopping cluster on Rue Leperdit.

Gomina (Paris)

Part of the Haut-Marais menswear landscape since 2009, Gomina combines heritage clothing, workwear, military influences, footwear, accessories, and a serious Japanese denim offering.

Jinji (Paris and Biarritz)

A French heritage shop with a rock-and-roll road-trip sensibility, mixing Japanese denim and craft with vintage Americana, military pieces, and its own label.

Royalcheese (Paris)

A Paris retail name since the late 90s, mixing denim, workwear, boots, and rugged everyday clothing across several shops—with a name borrowed from Pulp Fiction.

T-Bird (Paris)

A passion project from a Paris motorcyclist who built the shop he wanted to shop in himself—denim, leather, and heritage clothing chosen with a biker’s conviction and a distinctly French sense of what’s worth wearing.

GERMANY

Burg & Schild (Berlin)

One of Europe’s great heritage menswear destinations, built by Kay Schild around Japanese denim, American workwear, boots, and leather jackets. A visit in 2010 played a key role in my decision to start Denimhunters.

Ciao Ragazzi (Stuttgart)

A Stuttgart denim shop with Italian warmth, German textile knowledge, and a serious Japanese selvedge selection—plus refreshingly sensible advice about actually washing your jeans.

DC4 (Berlin)

Berlin’s original Japanese denim destination, open since 2004, with two stores and a vintage Union Special for chain stitching on the floor.

Four Aces (Bremen)

Raw denim and heritage menswear in Bremen’s Viertel neighbourhood, with a personal brand selection and the kind of shop that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.

Hafen4 (Ulm)

A straightforward heritage menswear shop with a well-chosen mix of German, American, and Japanese brands, plus enough denim and boots to make it relevant beyond its home city.

Kentaurus (Cologne)

Two Cologne stores with one of the most eclectic brand lists in Europe, where Stefan Laskowski prefers a phone call to a shopping cart.

Quartier97 (Würzburg)

Built around a belief in tradition, craftsmanship, and longevity, with a carefully chosen mix of American, Japanese, and European brands the team genuinely believes in.

Rider’s Room (Hamburg)

A motorcycle-rooted heritage shop with an almost overwhelming range of jackets, boots, denim, helmets, gloves, and pretty much everything else you might need on or off the bike.

Statement (Munich)

Deep Japanese denim, serious leather jackets, and a friendly “easy like Sunday morning” welcome from possibly the nicest Berlin punk rocker to ever settle down in Bavaria.

Stilkontor (Leipzig)

A carefully edited heritage menswear shop balancing rugged denim and workwear with softer contemporary influences, presented with the kind of attention to detail you’d expect from a place called “Style Bureau.”

stuf|f (Düsseldorf and Hamburg)

One of the most comprehensive brand selections in European heritage menswear, built over years of chasing the very best names in the field.

ISRAEL

Rollers (Tel Aviv)

Founded after a life-changing trip to Japan, Rollers brings together heritage clothing, boots, motorcycles, and a thoughtfully chosen mix of Japanese, American, and European brands.

I know Israel is technically in the Middle East, but I’ve included it here because, for the purpose of these guides, it fits more naturally with Europe than Asia-Pacific.

ITALY

Cult of Indigo (Sardinia)

Italy’s first dedicated Japanese denim store, opened in 2020 in the historic Villanova district of Cagliari—a long way from the usual heritage retail centres, and all the better for it.

Rugged Society (Milan)

An appointment-only heritage shop and social space built around denim, workwear, private shopping, community dinners, and the idea of buying less but wearing better.

THE NETHERLANDS

Arborator Denim Company (Haarlem)

A raw-denim-only shop with some of the top denim brands from Japan, Europe, and the US, where owner Martijn buys deep into the collections and values personal contact over e-commerce. No washed jeans. No webshop. Come to Haarlem.

Black & Blue (Nijmegen)

A lifestyle shop where Japanese denim, Scandinavian design, and motorcycle culture all sit comfortably together.

De Rode Winkel (Utrecht)

Founded in 1837, almost certainly the oldest shop in the world to sell jeans—nearly two centuries of Dutch retail history, now stocking everything from Levi’s to Momotaro.

Store Du Nord (The Hague)

A shop for independent makers, slow design, and the quiet work of craft. Owner Jeroen has also contributed to Denimhunters and ran the Artisan Challenge, where we looked for the world’s best jean maker.

Tenue de Nîmes (Amsterdam)

Arguably the most influential denim shop in Europe, built on a foundation of storytelling and editorial that nobody else was doing at the time.

NORWAY

Raw Denim Norway (Oslo)

Started as a vintage shop before becoming Norway’s first dedicated raw denim store, with fitting knowledge shaped by years of buying, selling, and repairing worn-in jeans.

POLAND

Faster Dog (Warsaw)

Poland’s raw denim stronghold, with Japanese selvedge, mid-century Americana, Red Wing boots, and the kind of old-school shop atmosphere that makes the scene feel alive locally. No traditional webshop—remote orders are handled personally through social media and email.

SPAIN

AiTORA (Barcelona)

A three-brand shop—Iron Heart, Momotaro, and Pherrow’s—that treats focus as a philosophy rather than a limitation.

Angry Souls (Madrid)

A heritage menswear shop with a distinctly Western flavour, where Japanese denim, boots, leather goods, and old-school service come together under one roof.

SWEDEN

Care of Carl (Borås)

One of Europe’s largest menswear retailers, combining heritage brands, premium denim, tailoring, footwear, and unusually strong editorial content in a single online destination.

Göteborg Manufaktur (Gothenburg)

Started with one sewing machine in a corner of a vintage store, now one of Sweden’s best Japanese denim destinations—repairs, chain-stitch embroidery, and bespoke tailoring still at the heart of it.

HepCat Store (Lund)

A Swedish institution since 1999 with a rockabilly soul, a broad heritage menswear selection, vinyl records, and an annual HepCat Day that draws the community together.

Meadow (Malmö)

Serious Japanese and American heritage brands presented with a warmth and ease that makes the whole thing feel approachable—the “be a buddy” ethos isn’t just a tagline, it’s how Christopher runs the shop.

Pancho & Lefty (Stockholm)

Mikko went to Japan three years in a row to convince Kapital to work with him—and that kind of stubbornness applied to taste is what you get throughout the shop, run in partnership with the founder of Indigofera.

Second Sunrise (Stockholm)

Formerly known as Unionville, as listed in Blue Blooded, with a strong Japanese and American selection, an in-house repair studio, and a knack for finding brands that rarely make it outside Japan.

SWITZERLAND

Feinfracht (Bern and Basel)

American workwear, Japanese denim, Red Wing boots, and classic everyday goods from a Swiss shop with a calm, confident point of view.

Jeanslife (Winterthur)

Part heritage menswear shop, part community hub, with a tailor’s workshop, craft beer bar, and café extending the shop well beyond the racks.

Jeanswerk (St. Gallen)

Serious Japanese and American denim, served with a whisky or a glass of champagne while they tell you the story behind each brand.

Recall Clothing (Geneva)

A one-man boutique with a very personal mix of Japanese denim, Italian-made clothing, leather goods, and accessories, all filtered through a sharper European sense of style.

Tempo (Lausanne)

A thoughtful blend of Japanese heritage, European craft, and design-led menswear, with denim sitting comfortably alongside footwear, furniture, books, and objects.

VMC (Zurich)

Iron Heart made their 25 oz. denim exclusively for VMC’s 25th anniversary—that’s the kind of shop this is. There’s no online shop, and that’s the point. VMC is the European denim pilgrimage destination—I made the journey in 2012.

THE UK

Arnold & Co. (Sheffield)

Part barber, part menswear shop, and the home of Forge Denim, bringing Japanese selvedge, British-made denim, and heritage clothing together under one roof.

Auteur (Manchester)

A focused heritage menswear shop with a particular strength in Japanese reproduction clothing, from military wear and denim to boots and everyday basics.

American Classics (London)

One of the foundations of Americana retail in Britain, evolving from vintage Levi’s and early streetwear into a long-running destination for Japanese reproduction brands and heritage menswear.

Belfast Bureau (Belfast)

From early support of Margiela, Dries Van Noten, and Margaret Howell to today’s Japanese denim and workwear selection, The Bureau has spent more than three decades staying ahead of the curve.

Doe & Dog (Norwich)

Opened in 2024 and named after an 18th-century painting, this shop is built around contrast: Japanese denim, Ivy-leaning menswear, military-inspired clothing, and Union Special hemming under one very considered roof.

East West Apparel (Bristol)

A boot and leather specialist first, with some of the hardest-to-find Japanese and American footwear in Europe, plus leather jackets, denim, and the kind of sizing advice that really matters at this level.

END. (Multiple locations)

A global online retail landmark that now sits closer to luxury, streetwear, and sneakers than raw denim, but still belongs here for its long menswear influence and occasional denim worth catching.

Jeanstore (Worthing)

Doing denim and dry goods since 1967, Jeanstore has one of the strongest claims to being the UK’s oldest jeans specialist, evolving from the Levi’s and Wrangler roots into Japanese denim, selvedge, and wider heritage menswear.

Kafka Mercantile (Aberdeen)

Independent since 1990, bringing together Japanese, American, and European labels with a point of view that feels broader than the typical heritage menswear shop.

Peggs & son (Brighton)

Japanese denim, technical outerwear, and contemporary menswear shaped as much by music and subculture as by traditional menswear.

Rivet & Hide (London and Manchester)

Founded after a chance visit to Self Edge in San Francisco, Rivet & Hide helped establish the modern Japanese denim scene in the UK through specialist service, sizing expertise, and a serious brand roster.

Son of a Stag (London)

Since 1993, this has been one of the top denim destinations in the British heritage menswear scene, with Japanese denim at the heart of the shop long before most people knew what selvedge was.

Union Clothing (Newcastle)

Trading since 1987, with a denim table at the centre of the shop and a long habit of mixing workwear, skate, and streetwear without overthinking the labels.
