Q&A with Roxanne aka @roxrocks86
I’m kind of surprised that no one’s called out the blatant and unwarranted discrimination that’s been going on here at Denimhunters for the past 6-7 months. 29 Q&As with Blue Blooded Instagrammers so far and only one of them a woman (@denimbitch).
It’s not because there aren’t women in denim. And in my own defence, I did list 23 Instagram feed run by ladies in denim that you should follow. So here’s a Q&A with one of the ladies on that list, @roxrocks86.
What’s your story
Name: Roxanne
Birth year: 1986
Location: Honolulu, HI
Profession: Construction (drywall finisher and site admin)
How Roxanne Keeps Up Her Instagram Feed
Thomas: How did it all start with your Instagram feed?
Roxanne: One of the Iron Heart forum members suggested Instagram as a way to share how I wear my Iron Heart clothes in leisure and in work. Seemed like a fun idea, so I went for it.
T: Why Instagram? What are your goals?
R: It’s a simple platform. You post what you like, see what you like, like what you like, and come across others with similar interests.
It’s a great learning tool for discovering new things, getting feedback, being creative, and getting inspired by others.
As for my feed, the only goal is to have fun and enjoy it for what it is with no pressure.
T: How much time do you spend on Instagram on a daily basis?
R: A lot. But in relation to posting, commenting, browsing, and liking stuff around 1-2 hours a day.
T: How do you take your photos?
R: iPhone on timer 100% of the time. Haha.
T: Which tools do you use?
R: iPhone X, whatever random tool, bucket or material is lying around the job site to prop the phone up and an Apple Watch as a viewfinder and shutter timer.
T: What’s your editorial flow?
R: Nothing is planned. Most of my pics are randomly taken in the mornings at work so if I’m opening up the site or going around taking pics for reports and documentation purposes, I’ll snap a few for fun before the work day begins.
T: What are your favourite locations to take photos? And why?
R: Work. It’s where I am the majority of the week and where I use denim and boots the most.
Roxanne’s (Awesome) Denim and Boot Style
T: How did you get into denim?
R: I always wore denim, but I didn’t care how or where it was made until recently. Earlier this year, I found out Red Wing has a line for women while searching Instagram for boots, and they were almost always paired with denim. That’s when I discovered Iron Heart and the community that exists around it.
T: What’s your favourite feature of jeans?
R: My go-to answer is always pockets.
T: How do you wash your denim?
R: Usually in an unorthodox way. If I decide to soak them, there’s a chance I’ll dunk them in a bucket and forget about them until a few days later or if they’re gross they get a hot bubble bath in the machine and tumble dry in hell.
T: What’s your favourite fit?
R: Slim tapered low rise. I usually go for Iron Heart’s 777 fit.
T: Which boots and leather goods do you wear with your denim?
R: Yikes! Tough question. I got a growing collection of boots from the Red Wing Heritage’s women’s line ? But they all serve a purpose.
Short engineers for when I need to constantly slip on and off my boots. 6’’ boots for something lightweight and ease of tying. 8” boots for rainy days and ankle support. Heeled boots for leisurewear.
As for leather goods, it’s a toss-up between a veg tan belt from Railcar Fine Goods and a black belt that fades to brown from Pigeon Tree Crafting.

T: Which sneakers do you wear?
R: Usually Converse 70s or Vans.
T: Favourite item that’s not denim or leather?
R: Surf brand tank tops.
T: Where do you buy your gear?
R: Online directly from the brand’s website.
T: What styling tips would you give your followers if they wanted your style?
R: Haha, I don’t have style! ??♀️
Just do you! If anything, get an oversized flannel, knot it up, slip on some boots and get dirty! ?
